Portugal Physician Observation

PROGRAM INTRODUCTION

Program Leader: Ulluminair Salim

The two-week Portugal Physician Observation program offers Judy Genshaft Honors College students a unique opportunity to accompany physicians at one of Lisbon's public hospitals. Students will gain exposure to the cultural and economic complexities of the hospital, the National Health System and immerse themselves in the vibrant life of Lisbon.

Portuguese hospitals provide aspiring health care practitioners with an uncommon experience — from observing the hospital director handling administrative paperwork to watching a heart surgeon perform a long-awaited surgery or a gynecologist conduct a clinical obstetric exam.

During the program, students will have the opportunity to get to know their preceptors as they journey alongside them. This model allows students to learn about their financial and familial sacrifices, emotional and psychological struggles, and unwavering dedication to serving patients.

CULTURAL IMMERSION

From Monday to Thursday, students will accompany physicians for five or more hours per day, rotating specialties each week. On Friday, students will participate in a group cultural excursion to one of Lisbon’s many wonders, and they will have free time on Saturday and Sunday.

Pre-health students in the Judy Genshaft Honors College with an interest in global health and advancing their intercultural competency will benefit tremendously from this program.

HONORS REQUIREMENTS

Please note that the study abroad program satisfies the Global Experience requirement for completing the Judy Genshaft Honors College curriculum. However, the associated internship course will not satisfy an Honors core course requirement and is only one credit.
